Zendaya Has Some Advice for Men: Step Up to the Plate
In a new interview with Elle.com, Zendaya encourages women to speak up when they are treated unfairly, and to look out for other women, too. She said, “I think that it’s important that we right now especially not be afraid or feared into silence because we need each other, and we need each other’s voice now more than ever.“
The 21-year-old actress often uses her platform to address political issues, whether she’s calling for equal pay for black women, voicing support for NFL players who take a knee to protest racism, or raising awareness of the digital divide. In the Elle interview, she points out that men have a role in fighting for women’s equality. She said, “It’s important for men to step up to the plate and do a little bit of work too. I think all the help we can get is important. Women are very, very strong and powerful, but it’s also up to men to be accountable and also to push forward the things that we need as well.”
Last month, Zendaya told Glamour that with everything that’s going on in the world, she feels a responsibility to speak out. She said, “Here’s the thing—I can genuinely say that I’m not the same person I was a year ago. As my social platforms grew, I realized that my voice was so much more important than I had originally thought. I think if every young person understood the power of their voice, things would be a lot different. And it’s becoming more popular to be outspoken.” She told the magazine she’s inspired by other people who use their platforms, too, and said, “If people know your name, they should know it for a reason.”
If anyone out there still doesn’t know Zendaya’s name, they will soon. Next month, she’ll appear in her biggest feature film role yet, starring opposite Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in the musical The Greatest Showman. She partnered with the clothing brand Aqua on a collection of eveningwear inspired by the movie, and it looks stunning on her:
Zendaya has been doing lots of press leading up to the movie’s December 20 release. She is on the cover of Fashion magazine’s winter issue, and in the interview, she says she tries to view all the pressure she’s under as a gift. “It’s a motivation; it’s something that makes you want to be better and work harder. I try to think of it that way.“ She added, “All of this is great, but all of this can go away. At the end of the day, you are stuck with you, and that’s the person you are.”
Zendaya posed in silver metallic outfits for her Fashion shoot with Arkan Zakharov, and she looks so good that one Twitter user joked, “the photographers wanted to wrap her in foil to save her for later.”
